It’s a sentiment I’ve heard many times. Given how widespread anxiety is, it’s easy to understand why people believe that if someone could “cure” it, they’d be set for life. But the truth is, curing anxiety isn’t the goal—and it shouldn’t be.
Anxiety is a natural and essential part of being human. It plays a critical role in keeping us safe and alert to potential threats. However, it’s the overwhelming, anticipatory anxiety that tends to create problems in our day-to-day lives. In this post, we’ll explore why curing anxiety isn’t necessary, how anticipatory anxiety disrupts our lives, and what we can do to resolve it effectively.
Anxiety is hardwired into our brains as part of our evolutionary survival system. It’s that ancient part of us that helped our ancestors stay safe from threats, like predators or natural dangers. Anxiety triggers the “fight or flight” response, which prepares the body to either face danger or escape it. So, at its core, anxiety has always been a survival tool.
Because of this, curing anxiety altogether wouldn’t be in our best interest. We still need it to alert us to real dangers or stressful situations. For instance, feeling a little anxious before an important exam, job interview, or presentation can heighten our awareness and help us perform better.
The problem isn’t anxiety itself. It’s the type of anxiety that shows up without any real threat.
One of the most common forms of disruptive anxiety is anticipatory anxiety. This is the kind of anxiety that stems from worrying about future events—things that might happen, but aren’t happening right now. It’s when your mind jumps to the worst-case scenario, and you start to feel anxious about situations that may never occur.
This is the anxiety we need to address. It’s not serving a useful purpose, and instead of helping us survive, it’s holding us back.
Here’s the key point: curing anxiety isn’t the right goal. Anxiety serves an important function in keeping us alert and responsive to danger. However, managing and resolving anticipatory anxiety is essential to living a fuller, healthier life.
Rather than searching for a "cure," we should focus on strategies to manage anxiety and prevent it from controlling our thoughts and actions. When we resolve anticipatory anxiety, we gain more control over how we respond to life’s challenges, without being trapped by fear of what might happen.
